This work is an act of peaceful rebellion against the societal pressure to hide the “broken” parts of ourselves. Having spent thousands of hours both providing emergency medical care and later enduring my own journey through the most painful diseases known to medicine, I have learned that healing is not about returning to a state of perfection, but about the radical visibility of our scars.

In Unmasked Healing, I utilize gauze-like textures and gold leaf to map the topography of the medicalized body. By placing gold directly into the “wounds” of the fabric, I refuse to obscure the evidence of struggle. Instead, I transform these ruptures into sites of profound value. For me, art-making is a grounding practice that provides a necessary sanctuary from physical symptoms; it is where I turn the sensory chaos of illness into a luminous record of persistence. This piece serves as a reminder that our most weathered layers are often where our greatest resilience—and our most brilliant light—is found.
